NEVERMORE

The Brains Behind This Instagram-Worthy Lounge

From your first step through our pristine, faceless doorway into a dark, defiled back alley, to its climax in the vulnerably-pink recesses of our lounge, Golden Shower ushers you into a layered visual representation of human sensuality. Designed to provoke the interest and seduce the senses of even the most hedonistic of pleasure-seekers, Golden Shower’s eye-catching aesthetics were conceptualised by Nevermore Design.

The award-winning, Penang-based interior design company was founded in 2010 by the Chuah brothers, Say Yang and Say Win. Graduates of Interior Architecture from LIMKOKWING University, the pair prefer bold, raw designs that make a statement. Nevermore’s hallmarks are their minimalist touch and ability to marry history and contemporary design, both of which are strongly evident in the subtle 1920’s throwbacks throughout the restored colonial shop lot that houses Golden Shower.

Nevermore’s association with Golden Shower is nothing more than a touch of serendipity. When Chef Weng put out a call on Facebook for interior design recommendations, little did he expect to reconnect with his former schoolmate. The pair go way back—Say Yang recalls playing soccer on a weekly basis with Weng as thirteen-year-olds. Describing working with the chinchin group as fun, exciting, and challenging, Say Yang took up the challenge to push the limits of contemporary interior design and showcase what Nevermore and Penang can offer. In fact, the name Golden Shower itself is a result of the conceptual work between Nevermore and chinchin.

The inspiration behind the design was to create a space that encouraged interaction. Using the simplicity of its architecture to emphasise the concept of sensation and physical experiences, Nevermore divided Golden Shower into three distinct sections. The entrance, a gold-plated bathroom scene, sets the stage for a sense of awareness and curiosity where only the brave are rewarded. The transition zone, a gritty hallway filled with graffiti and street art, represents patrons taking their first step into the unknown. Through the main door, patrons step into the lounge itself and are transported into a lounge clad in pink and gold that speaks for itself—patrons are treated to a fantastic gastronomic experience and a ridiculously eye-pleasing interior, whether they sit at the bar or relax in the lounge.

The end result is stunning. Golden Shower by chinchin has garnered rave reviews not just for its menu, but for how visually stunning and Instagram-worthy it is. And that is indeed high praise in this photo-crazy generation.
